This album, Imago, is the culmination of three years of on and off work as a duo since our first album, Straight Through the Night. These three movements developed to have both sonic and metaphorical resonance with the idea of periodic cicadas. They spend 17 years underground, and then emerge as adults, quite loudly (to our dismay but perhaps their delight?). Latin for ‘image,’ the term imago is used to describe the fully developed form of an insect or an idealized mental image of a person.

Over the past year it has been hard not to put our emotions and desires into the music. It came to represent us, and all of you, biding our time during this pandemic and doing what’s necessary so that one day when we do all come out we can — more truly than before — live together.

Night School (Will Packer & Jimmy Zenger) was born in the educators’ apartment in 2015. Their 2017 debut album, on which they are joined by Chris Mastrocola on drums and Manjula Raman on voice, was inspired by progressive bands of the 70’s and 80’s.
